The Strategy Plane
The client’s brief made reference to a couple of competitor websites, including Working Sail, Cockwells and Wooden Boat Building.
Before embarking on the design of Tim’s new website, I created a series of moodboards using Adobe Photoshop gathering relative details of each website’s layout features, functionality and overall design.
Similar to the analysis of Tim Loftus’s original website, this exercise acted as an aid for determining what sort of features, themes and structure I may consider during the website design process.
Many Artists, Graphic Designers and Web Designers may tell you to stay away from looking too heavily into other people’s work. No one likes a copycat, and we’re always pushed to express our uniqueness through the work we create.
As much as I agree with the above, I also believe that as a young aspiring web designer, looking and communicating about the work of others is key to forming a personal opinion. An initial opinion leads to asking why it’s made you feel that way and what you would do differently or similarly, thus shaping your personal style.
